The metal element antimony, as a very effective flame retardant, has been used in various polymers, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. In the past 40 years, antimony has been commonly used in CMP flame retardant grade PVC formulas. Its role is mainly to inhibit flame spread and meet the requirements of UL 910 and NFPA 262.

Antimony is usually used in wire and cable formulas, and is considered to be the most effective fire retardant additive, and can have synergistic effects with other ingredients in the formula. However, antimony has been included in the list of chemicals in California's Proposition 65, which may subject manufacturers (OEMs) to certain requirements under the proposal.

GEON® has been commissioned by a number of communication cable manufacturers to successfully develop PVC formulas that meet the following key quality characteristics (CTQ):

• The formula does not contain antimony

• Meets the requirements of UL 444 and UL 910 for communication cables

• Can be processed at the appropriate linear speed

• Meet or exceed the performance requirements of all existing customers for current CMP flame retardant grade products
